In a week when an unspecified number of Charlton staff started the redundancy process, young Stavrinou has his contract extended for another year. Probably not the first name out of the hat for most supporters if they were asked who they would like to keep for 2011 from those whose contracts expire in just over a weeks time, but at least Parkinson now has eleven players to choose from, lucky fellow.
That could change very soon of course, as Bailey to Middlesboro seems to be a done deal in most peoples opinion. I have to say, I am staggered at the thought we might get £1.4m for him, and I am already on record as believing that £1m would be silly money for a player who started last season like an express train, and ended it like Network Rail. I will keep my powder dry for now, as the deal is not done, but it will be interesting to see how much cash we would actually get up front for him.
Elsewhere it is ominously quiet as to who will stay and who will go. As the club are in no position to turn down any vaguely sensible offer, agents will no doubt be working overtime trying to secure their clients the best deal they can for next year, whether that is with Charlton or not. Let's hope that some of the class of 2010 can be encouraged to stay. Not all of them mind; after all they weren't good enough to get us out of the third division last term, so why would they be any better next time round? New blood is definitely required, but will out of contract journeyman pro's and untried non-leaguers be any better?
